Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) Certificates

Building in a bushfire prone area?

We’ll help get your project moving.

If you’re planning a new home, renovation or development on bushfire prone land, you’ll need a BAL Certificate as part of your Complying Development application.

It’s a key step in making sure your build meets bushfire construction standards set out in Planning for Bush Fire Protection and AS3959:2018.

At Firetech, we specialise in Bushfire Attack Level Certificates for residential, commercial and industrial builds.

We know the local landscape, we understand council requirements, and we deliver clear, site-specific assessments to keep your project on track.

What is a BAL Certificate?

A BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) Assessment is a site-specific review and rating of your property or development’s bushfire risk.

It looks at:

  • The type and density of surrounding vegetation
  • How close the vegetation is to your planned build
  • Slope of the land, which affects fire behaviour
  • Required setbacks from hazard areas

We provide clear, accurate and compliant BAL Certificates for Complying Developments in NSW, including subdivision lots.

If you’re unsure, we’ll guide you through what’s needed for a Development Application.

When do you need a BAL Certificate?

You’ll need a BAL Certificate when:

  • Applying for a Complying Development Certificate (CDC) on bushfire prone land
  • Planning to build, extend or renovate in a mapped bushfire risk area
  • Working out whether your lot is eligible for the CDC approval pathway

We also recommend getting a BAL Certificate early if you’re purchasing land or designing a new build, so you can factor bushfire compliance into your plans upfront.
